CONNTEX Secures Hay Bale Covers

Storing hay and straw outdoors presents a familiar challenge for farmers and agricultural businesses. Once the bales have been stacked, they need reliable protection from rain, moisture and changing winter weather. A purpose-designed cover provides an important barrier between the crop and the elements. However, the cover itself must also remain securely in position. Strong winds can place considerable pressure on a large covered surface, particularly around exposed edges and corners. Without an effective restraint system, the cover may lift, move or pull away from the stack. One of our clients supplies covers designed to protect stacked hay and straw bales throughout the winter. To help secure the weighted attachments positioned around the sides of these covers, we supplied them with 50mm KLASP Mushroom Hook Tape. This is a great example of a specialist fastening material being used to solve a practical challenge in an agricultural application.

The Challenge: Keeping a Large Cover in Position
Hay and straw stacks can vary considerably in height, width and shape. The covers protecting them must be large enough to extend over the stack while still being manageable during installation. Once fitted, the cover is exposed to changing outdoor conditions for an extended period. Wind can catch underneath loose areas or pull at the edges, creating movement across the cover. If the cover is not held down effectively, this movement can reduce protection and potentially expose the bales beneath.
Weights provide a straightforward way to help secure the cover. Positioned at suitable points around its sides, they apply downward force and help prevent the material from lifting in the wind. The challenge is finding a reliable way to attach those weights to the cover. The fastening system needs to form a strong connection, cope with the stresses created by wind and remain dependable over a prolonged period. At the same time, the weights need to be practical to position when the cover is installed.
How the Fastening System Works
KLASP Mushroom Hook is used alongside compatible regular or woven loop material incorporated into the cover system. The mushroom-shaped hooks engage firmly with the loop surface, creating a strong connection between the cover and the weighted attachment. Once the weights have been positioned around the sides of the stack, they help keep the cover tensioned and reduce its ability to lift or move in windy conditions.
This approach also gives the cover supplier flexibility over where weighted attachments are placed. Rather than relying solely on fixed ropes or permanent fastening points, compatible hook-and-loop components can be integrated into the cover design to create a practical and easy-to-use system. The result is a secure fastening method that supports the wider function of the cover: keeping hay and straw protected throughout the winter.
Why KLASP Mushroom Hook Was Chosen
Not every hook-and-loop product is intended for the same purpose.
Some fastening systems are designed to be opened and closed repeatedly. These are ideal for products such as clothing, bags, removable panels and other applications where frequent access is required. KLASP Mushroom Hook is designed for a different type of application. It is intended for situations where opening and closing is relatively infrequent, but an exceptionally strong bond is needed when the fastener is engaged. When used with regular or woven loop material, KLASP provides extremely high peel and shear strength. These two properties are particularly important in demanding fastening applications.
Peel strength relates to the force required to separate the fastener by pulling it away from one edge. This can be relevant when wind catches an exposed section of the cover and begins to lift it.
Shear strength relates to the fastener’s ability to resist forces moving parallel to its surface. In this application, that helps the connection withstand the pulling and sliding forces created as the cover moves in changing weather.
Together, these characteristics make KLASP a strong choice for applications where the fastening point needs to remain securely connected after installation.
